as easy as falling off a log

In my quest for diversity, I plan on growing several orchids on a log
and thought I'd ask the Group's advice. I'm looking to have several
smaller orchids, the log will be laying down so they won't need to be
tied (like mounted orchids). I'll probably put some Spanish moss around
and under the log for effect, but orchid moss, some charcoal and coconut
chips under and over the roots.

So far I plan on using Masdevallia Celtic Frost (Angel Frost X
glandulosa) (pink, orange and fragrant) or it may be the Masdevallia
June Winn (Redwing X decumana)( red) as one plant. I mounted one on cork
(thanks, Ray) and mixed them up so I'm not sure which is left and they
are babies. I also hope to replace a
Trisetella cordeliae (red with yellow) which died (another tiny one), so
I'm going for a red growing out of green and brown effect. Any suggestions?

I have 3 mounted (two Phals and one of the Masdevallia) one caged Phal
and lots of potted orchids of various sorts. I can't go too crazy with
size, as it all has to fit in my orchiderium when the cold weather comes
to CT.

Suggestion one: don't do it, unless you're certain all have the very same
growing needs, and never have any interest in separating them ever again.

Suggestion two: see if you can find a cork bark "tube," as it will tend to
be stable for a long while, which might not be true for other potential
"log" choices.

Suggestion three: don't put anything between the roots and the mount. If
you want a small pad of moss for moisture-holding capacity, put it over the
roots, not under.

Suggestion four: if you think your conditions mandate the use of growing
medium (moss, charcoal, & CHC), please reread the first phrase of suggestion
one. Trying to combine mounted and potted conditions is tough, and usually
ends up unsatisfactory in some way.

Denrobium loddigessi seems to grow well on a log. Catasetums family members
(warm growers) will do well on logs. Then there is the cork mount --
Brassavola will do well on cork, Vanda sanderiana, Vanda tesselata, Brassavola
digbyana, Schomburgkia tibicina, Schomburkgia exaltata, etc.

Richard,
Oh come on surely you can do better than that! It's an orchid group, you
could for example test by writing:
"Orchids rule!" or "Buy more orchids!" or "Would an orchid by any other name
be still as alluring?"

Talking of charcoal are there any Oz members of this group who know where to
get powdered charcoal?
