web hosting recommendations?

Anybody have a favorite web hosting service? I need to be able to run
perl and/or PHP, and access to a database would be nice... I can get
all of that through Michigan State, but they charge more than an arm and
a leg. I don't think they have taken a look at the market lately.

Yes, I have root access to at least 5 web servers at work, but this is a
'non-work' sort of thing - I don't think they would approve of hosting
littlefrogfarm.com Not that I've asked...

Have you tried 1&1? I've been looking at their ads and the prices look great
as well as the listed services. I'm seriously thinking about them. Anyone
else have experience with them?

Rob,
You may want to look at http://www.1stcom.com/ , I believe php, cgi, pearl,
unlimited email , several plans, prices are fair, starting at about $6 - 7
month. Down time nil, support if needed is prompt. We have 4 sites there and
are switching a community theater site over(40 % saving).

No link, commission....just a satisfied customer

Jim

If by chance I replied to you rather than the group, my apologies. Mea
culpa.

I registered several domains with 1&1 over the past year, e.g.
http://pinelandsorchidsociety.org/, and have had only good experiences
so far. I haven't tried their web hosting yet, but it appears to be a
good deal as well.

I have been using AffordableHost (www.affordablehost.com) to host the
Northwest Orchid Society site for a few years now. Great service, fast,
and they have a non-profit discount. The reliability is excellent, and
they have a whole package of PHP and database stuff, using the CPanel
interface. Real nice people. They have a lot of different hosting
package options.

I registered the domain at GoDaddy.

No clue here about web hosting but I just had to compliment you on the
littlefrogfarm.com name. Great name, brings up all sorts of images.

Now if I could find a way to access the net without going through one of the
big isp providers that would be great. SBC/Yahoo is terrible about knocking
one offline just when something important is being downloaded.
