Default planting medium question

To anyone who can help. I am a neophyte when it comes to orchids but have
acquired a few. I wish to repot and seperate. My question is: can I use packing
excesior which is finly shreded wood as my planting medium? Have loads of it. I
am working primarily with Dendrobiums and Cattlyeas.
Please e-mail responses to as I am not a regular
subscriber or reader of this news group.
I got the impression orchids are like Psoriasis; once acquired it is very hard
to get it out of the "system"
Thanks in advance;
Bob
