iso Vanilla orchid

Dear Lerryn,
I don't know if this reply is even needed anymore but, if you are still
looking for vanilla orchid plants there is a Nursery on Hawaii Island
that sell plants and cuttings. I believe that for shipment to the US
mainland only cuttings will be legal but at any rate contact Pat
Kadooka at
He represents Kadooka Nursery. You can also see some vanilla growing
tips that they advise at:
http://www.theaos.org/publications/b.../growtips.html

I hope this helps!

Best regards,

Thank-you

EFG has a bunch hiding in their propagation houses... I don't know
if they are ready to put them out yet, but they all look to be well
established cuttings. I'm sure they will part with one. Don't know

the
phone number offhand. EFG Orchids, Villa Park, IL

Vanilla planifolia will eventually take up a -lot- of room. It is a
vining plant that can reach ten meters or so with the right enivroment
and care.

You shouldn't think about getting vanilla from it. The process
involves fermenting the beans in tropical heat for quite some time.

If you really want a piece of V. planifolia, it is being offered on
E-Bay by several sources. As with all things E-Bay, "caveat emptor."

There was an article in the Sacramento Bee about a commercial vanilla farm
on the big island. The guy had never been a farmer prior to starting up his
operation. He has 30,000 square feet of greenhouse and hopes to expand in
the future. It was a pretty interesting article but I can't find it on the
website at sacbee.com so no URL, sorry.
