Need advice on Cattleya!
 

hello everyone!

One of my patient gave me a bare root NOID Cattleya last night. The plant
comes from the montreal botanical garden and has 2 buds.

I planted it into S/H and I was wondering if I could put it outside knowing
that now the average temp is about 20 C durind Day and 12 to 15 C at night!
If not, is under my fluorescent will be enough?
Also, is the morning sun will be ok! ( 08 to 11 )

Claude, I would say that the temperatures are okay, supposing they will
get higher as summer progresses. IF the 12°C are minimum temps and not
average. Mine have been out for a while now and down to 9°C at night,
but I wouldn't feel safe letting them get any colder.
Anyone else have input?

A wild guess. IF the plant is from the gardens it has been grown
in good strong light. The leaves are very hard and feel like
shoe leather and are a lighter green. If so it can probably take
all that light. But if the leaves are a rich lush green, it has
not been getting great light. I might take a chance, but I would
feel better if you could find somewhere with broken shadows
instead. Is there anything, even a chair back, that could cast a
moving shadow across this location?

I am a bit touchy about sunburn today - having sunburned me.

The leaves are very leathery and are a nice pale green. I placed it on my
balcony where it can get lots of shadowed light! I`ll see!
There is an old cane where I can see an old flower spike, yhen another cane
with a kind of capsule with 2 buds ( don`t remember the name of it ) and a
third cane which seems to grow another capsule!

Does almost all Cattleya are flagrant?

Yeah, I do.
I think a Catt that is bare root AND has 2 buds on it is going to need a
little extra caution if those buds are going to progress to flowers.
(I'm assuming, Claude, that you really mean flower buds and not new
leads developing.)
I would leave it under the fluorescent lights until it blooms then move
it outside for the rest of the summer. If you didn't mean that it has
flower buds it still might be a good idea to keep it in for a while so
it can get established. Remember, I live just a couple of hours down the
road from you and we both know we are prone to some cool nights for a
while longer.
I will say that since you use semi-hydro I would worry a little less
about water stress and so, worry less about going from bare root to
outside in a short time. Also, it's just one plant so it's easy to just
bring it back in if we get some cold or windy weather. (I've almost
talked myself into telling you to leave it outside.) :-)

Claude, I have seen a photo of you and you don't look Chinese! ;-)
I think you meant fragrant. There are unfortunately lots of Cattleyas
that *aren't* fragrant.

The 'capsule' with the buds is a sheath. If you can see the bud
shadows the development is well along. I hope the division has
some roots to support this so your buds will not blast. Good
luck and please try to post a photo of the blooms. Sounds like
you have a good place to summer the Catt. If you summer it
outside, It should bloom regularly for you even if it gets less
than optimum light under the grow lights in the winter.

I have decided to put the plant on windowsill until it finished blooming!
One bud is starting to open ! I`ll try to post some picture!

Hello again!

Both buds are now open, it`s a white florer with yellow lip! It has a very
nice fragrance, kind of a mix between lilac and lilly of the valley!

I followed your advice and lifted the plant a bit. Now, I can see where the
cane are attached to the rhizome. Is this ok?
