MAKING MY OWN ORCHID (ETC) LABELS
 

I found that necessity is the mother of invention, ran out of plant
labels and was repotting some kiekis when I spied the white plastic
empty jug in the recycle bin, cut it into strips and I was in business.
But I imnagine you gurus allresady know that.

I don't imagine the plastic from the jug will stand up well to UV
light and will deteriorate fairly quickly if used outside. Of course,
some store bought labels don't hold up well outside either.

Venetian blind slats work well too. Easy to cut, write on and UV protected

Yes, I would expect them to last a long time. The other issue to be
concerned with is the writing for the label. Pencil lasts darn near
forever, but I've never seen a marker that really does. Brother
P-Touch printed label tape does seem to last forever. I put a test
label with P-Touch printing out in full sun about 3 yrs ago and it
shows no sign of fading.

I tried boiling it in the microwave to see if moisture could get
under the label. We have had some one more than three years and
everyone is clear as it was to start. I have tried 4 or 5
permanent pens. NONE lasted in the sun. The only way to keep a
pen label good is to bury it in the bottom of the pot. IF you do
you only have to worry about your handwriting. That is another
advantage with the P-Touch. The type face is easy to read. If
you can type it correctly - in 5 years it will still be clear and
correct. With a pen or pencil some of the Es became As or Os -
and names became garbage.
