Dendrobium orchid
 

This is my first orchid in the Dendrobium family. I noticed that it was
sort of dry, so i took it out of the 4" pot. To my surprise, within that
clay pot, was another plastic pot with drainage holes. Why were they
planted that way? Does it make any difference?

Most of my plants are in plastic. For stabilization purposes, the ones that
need it then go into clay as well. Some are top heavy, and others are too
light to stand on their own on a windy day. I wouldn't worry about it.

It's a marketing thing. In the commercial nursery setting, plastic is the
only economical choice, but customers tend to prefer clay. So some folks
just set their plastic pots into clay when the plants come into bloom.
