Default Almost perfect :-)

I have a Catt, Bc. Pastoral 'Innocence' AM/AOS (so says the tag), and
it's oldest sheath split and the inflorescence emerged late last week.
The flowers opened this week; there are two on the inflorescence. At
first I thought it was defective since the flowers were open but there
was no scent. This morning, I checked again and it now has a scent.
The only deviation from "perfection" is that since I grow it in a
south facing window, it has biased its growth toward the south.

The petals and sepals are solid white. The lip is yellow, but fringed
with white, and there is a very short pink stripe in the middle of the
tip of the lip. The flowers are about 16 cm across.

It has 15 pseudobulbs which were present when I bought it; another
sheath that is still a long time from opening (the inflorescence is
still too small to be detected inside the sheath); and a relatively
new pseudobulb. This is one of several catts that have not apparently
suffered any from the winter dryness that has killed one catt and
severely stressed a couple others. This plant looks to be in perfect
health.

I had been tempted to take it to the show in Toronto in April, perhaps
so that SOOS could use it in the society's display, but there are
several issues that make that unlikely this year. The last catt I
bloomed out kept its flowers for only about three weeks. I don't know
if that is normal, or if I was doing something wrong. And if I was
doing something wrong, then I still am since I haven't changed
anything significantly. But I don't think I will contact the chap
taking care of the display, to see if the logistics of contributing
can be sorted out, since I am not sure that the flowers will remain in
good condition until the show. And then there's the issue that they
would need the plant to be in Toronto by 6PM on the Friday before the
show, and since I am working, there is no way I could get to that
location before 9PM Friday. And then there is the concern about how
much the transport, and also placing it in a display, would stress the
plant. I am sure that the fact it is in a really ugly plastic pot,
with an equally ugly wire support that I use to hang the pot,
guarantees that it will need to be repotted for the display. And then
there is the question of whether or not the fact I have had it only
about six months would affect the judging of the display. I don't
have anything else, except several african violets, that are in bloom,
and I don't think they'd be too receptive to the notion of displaying
african violets in an orchid display. ;-) I'd love to be able to
contribute to the society's display, but I don't see how this year.

Cheers,

Ted

The 6 month issue probably means that you do not want it Judged.
You can display plants that are not entered for Judging. Usually
you do not repot, just hide the pots and remove the hangers.
Talk with the fellow doing the display and tell him you can bring
it late, don't want it entered but would really like to
contribute to the fullness of the display. He may or may not
want to plan on it. He may ask you to call him that Thursday
night and confirm that you still want to display it and that the
flowers are still in good condition. Some of this will depend
on how many plants he expects to have to put the display
together. If you and he can come to agreement.. go for it.
