pumpkins as bottles?

Single-shot, one-time transport of plant-oil lamp fuel to campsites.

Bottle gourds would work just fine, but I'm wondering if pumpkins have
any advantages?

from the way i see it i'd reckon pumpkins for the main wouldn't do
because ultimately they do rot fairly quickly & completely and don't
seem to have the streangth in their shells unlike gourds that seem to
take forever to rot.
