Default Tomatos

I've planted a lot of tomatoes in my hydro unit. I'm told that when the
tomatoes are the size of a nickel, that I should remove all of the leave
stems that are lower than the tomatoes. My thinking is that doing that would
put the plant in shock as the stems are pretty big. Others say that the
plant will heal itself and the healing in itself will put more energy out
and make the tomato grow larger. What do you think? Les in Minnesota
