Faculty Positions in Plant Bioengineering

The University of Kentucky, in its new strategic plan, has identified
Plant Bioengineering for improved production of medicinals, food, fiber
and chemicals as a priority area for the future (see As part of the initiative in Plant
Bioengineering, the Department of Agronomy
( seeks to fill
three new faculty positions at the assistant, associate, or full
professor level. These new faculty will join a multidisciplinary
research community in the College of Agriculture that is internationally
recognized in plant biotechnology, plant natural products, and basic
plant research. The three new faculty will be housed in a well-equipped
research center that specializes in the development of practical
applications of new discoveries in plant science (see It is expected that this proximity will
contribute to a synergy amongst the new faculty by sharing of
mutually-useful technologies and expertise.

Biomedical plant genomics
The successful applicant will conduct innovative research at the
convergence of plant biochemistry, functional genomics, and medicine,
focusing on the discovery and production of plant-derived metabolites
with potential medicinal or veterinary use. Prior experience may be
with plant or biomedical systems. However, the new appointee will be
expected to establish a truly cross-disciplinary program through
collaborations with other researchers. Assistance will be provided in
arranging such collaborations and consideration will be given to
appointment with adjunct status in an appropriate medical research

Plant regulatory biology
The new appointee will establish a research program to study molecular
networks in plants, with interests in individual components and/or more
global issues pertinent to a particular network. Research areas
appropriate to this position could include (but are not limited to)
cytoskeletal dynamics and function, signal transduction and genetic
regulatory networks, metabolic regulation, or regulatory aspects of
plant developmental biology.

Crop genomics
This position will ideally suit an individual who is interested in
applying genomics and/or bioinformatics tools to plant improvement
through the understanding of biologically and economically important
traits. Examples of research foci include molecular breeding,
evolutionary approaches to understanding diversity in plant natural
products, and genome mining using bioinformatics and/or quantitative
genetic approaches.

Qualifications and expectations
Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent advanced education in a
relevant plant, biological, or biomedical science. Postdoctoral
experience is highly desirable. It is important that applicants
demonstrate prior research experience that is suited for the desired
position, and a potential to establish an independent, externally-funded
research program that addresses one or more of the topics described
above. Applicants for appointment at the associate or full professor
ranks should demonstrate a record of accomplishment appropriate for
these ranks. As each appointment has a distribution of effort of
approximately 85% research and 15% teaching, the new faculty will be
expected to participate in all aspects of undergraduate and graduate
student education.

To apply, please write or e-mail Dr. Michael Barrett (Chair), Agronomy
Department, Plant Science Building, University of Kentucky, Lexington,
KY 40546-0312 (e-mail: ; telephone: 859-257-5020
extension 80709), providing a cover letter, a resume, a 1-2 page
statement of research interests relating to one or more of the above
position descriptions, and a brief summary of teaching interests. In
addition, please arrange to have at least three letters of
recommendation sent to Dr. Barrett. (Names of individuals from whom
letters have been requested should be included in the application
packet). Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2003 and
continue until the positions are filled. Applications should be
complete by October 1, 2003 to assure full consideration.

The University of Kentucky is an equal opportunity employer.
Applications will be accepted without regard to race, color, age, sex,
religion, disability or national origin. Applications and inquiries
from women and minorities are particularly encouraged. The address of
the College of Agriculture EEO Coordinator is Room S-101 Agricultural
Science Center North, Lexington, KY 40546.
