began harvesting my potatoes today
Today began my potato harvest, although I should have taken in my last
green tomatoes and let them ripen up as they redden into November and December indoors. Potato harvest is not as good as years back because I did not water during the dry season. And the grasshoppers and insects really attacked them, just as the rhubarb. Next year should improve my potato crop by having more time to spend on them. Should come more organized next year. Especially planting them as early as possible to work the ground. |

last of the tomato harvest began harvesting my potatoes today
I can not wait for next spring when the asparagus comes up and I do
them properly by placing a tomato cage around them which will support them all during the season so they do not blow over and get in the way of my mowing. Today was a very rainy day, and the weather forecast gave a 100% chance of rainfall. Not often do they give a 100% probability. And we ended up with about 2 to 3 inches of rain. But I wish we had rain systems like this during the July summer, not when Fall Winter since the plants do not need the moisture. We had plenty of rain this year except not when it was really needed -- summer. And our summers are becoming drought stressed every year. Seems like every summer is turning me into a "watering boy" when I have more important projects I want to do. Today I harvested the last of the tomatoes, the green ones mostly and placed them on a metal grill rack. I find this as the best way to prevent mold. If you set tomatoes on plastic it becomes mold on its lay-surface. I love green tomatoes because by the time December rolls around, I still have ripening green to red tomatoes. So that I can have a lunch of buttered bread with fresh organic tomato slices sprinkled with pepper. Or better yet croissant tomato sandwiches. Looks like I will have no rhubard this year. But not to worry since I lacked a craving for rhubard for the past years. That leaves only the potatoes remaining to harvest. I leave them in the ground until I see no more green leaves on stems. The remaining ones still have green leafed stems. I store them over the winter also on a metal grill rack in a dark cold room.
