Manzanita identification
Anyone recognize what species of manzanita this could be? The bush is about 3 years old, 5-ft in height.
http://imageshack.us/f/51/gedc0733.jpg Before I hit every one of the 76 species on this page, I thought I would see if anyone might recognize what species of manzanita this is. http://plants.usda.gov/java/Classifi...3 &display=63 Location is western Calif. Thanks in advance. Hard to tell from the photo -- the leaves are in bunches of 4 with a thorn in the middle. Each group of 4 alternates on opposite sides of the branch. Branches are reddish brown and green mixed together (photo is pretty true). Oh, and the thorns are sharp (YEOOOOOWW!!!) Bob |

Photos are similar but the leaves on mine are very shiny, a little different shape and the flowers on mine are white. I found this one - looks just like this one from all the photos I can find. But since those are an endangered species only found near San Francisco, I doubt that this is it -- there is a quite a large patch of them in San Bernardino County right on the edge of a fairly busy road. http://www.theblaze.com/stories/taxp...n-in-san-fran/ Photo: http://www.theblaze.com/wp-content/u...-manzanita.png |

Hopefully that's enough to make it a common variety and keep it off of the endangered list!! |

Update -- I checked with the local endangered specialist and this is a common variety - not related to the franciscan manzanita.
