BIOL1180 Tropical Biology (Winter Break 2003-04) COSTA RICA


All Welcome

We are offering an academic tropical biology course inteneded for
non-majors
and as an elective for major in COSTA RICA Dec. 28-Jan. 11
(approx.) AT Lakeland
this course satisfies the science-Lab requirments for the A.A.
degree

The course will include ecotouring, lectures, hands-on activities in
rainforest, reef, wetland, and
savanna ecosystems.

The cost per student is will range from the low $2650 depending on
the number of students who go;
including air, ground, housing, food, supplies from Cleveland.
Students enroll in BIOL1180 Tropical Biology (Fall
2003)/www.lakelandcc.edu
The course is 4 semester hours

TENTATIVE TRAVEL ITINERARY - Academic Syllabus to come

* Day 1: Lv. Cleveland... Arrive Costa Rica, overnight at a hotel in or
near San Jose
* Day 2: To Monteverde: hike in the Santa Elena rainforest in the
afternoon.
* Day 3: Monteverde: ziplines or skywalk in the morning, horseback riding
through the forest in the afternoon.
* Day 4: To Arenal Volcano area. Arrive in time for lunch. Hike to the
"Mirador" in the afternoon. Visit to Baldi hotsprings at night.
* Day 5: Hike to Fortuna Waterfall in the morning. Visit to a local high
school in the afternoon.
* Day 6: To Sarapiqui area in the morning. White water rafting or a float
trip in the afternoon. Overnight at La Selva Biological Station.
* Day 7: Guide hikes in La Selva
* Day 8: To Puerto Viejo area. Stop at Aviarios del Caribe (a sloth rehab
center) on the way. In the evening a BriBri storyteller will speak to the
group about the way of life of the indigenous people in Costa Rica.
* Day 9: All day trek - bus, canoe, and hiking - to visit a BriBri school
and community
* Day 10: Spend the morning snorkeling on the beach, after lunch head for
Tortuguero.
* Day 11: Tortuguero; guided hikes and boat rides through the canals
* Day 12: return to San Jose after lunch.
* Day 13: head home.
