Default Sunfish in ponds?

Does anyone keep fish other than Koi or Goldfish in their pond? Anything
like sunfish or other domestics? If so, what are your general
comments/thoughts/precautions about doing so? Thanks.

I keep some rosy reds but they keep dying out for some reason. I never see
the bodies so assume something is having them for dinner. They're in the
one pond that's not netted.

I was told by several pond places that you take the risk of parasites &
diseases when adding wild fish.

I kept Orfes in with the koi. Orfes are good at birth control. Smaller
fish are food to GF and koi. Ingrid

Out here in Southern California, mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) are
encouraged for all ponds for the prevention of West Nile. I have quite a
bunch in my pond, and the goldfish don't seem to bother them.

Isn't that true of any new fish you add to the pond?

I also keep a few rosy reds. They're more active than the goldfish. My
pond is very small (130 gallon preformed), so I can't keep many goldfish.
The painted turtle is happy, though.

I'd never heard of them, apparently native to Europe. How large do they
grow?

I think that is true of captive bred fish as well but sunfish do not have
be wild; there are plenty of places that sell them.

Is the population of your rosy reds staying stable or dropping? We're not
sure what's happening to ours.

Default Sunfish in ponds?

Hi..

Does anyone keep fish other than Koi or Goldfish in their
pond? Anything like sunfish or other domestics?

Hmm.., I'm primary an aquarium keeper but I've several small
barrels and summer ponds where I'm used to "oversummer" my
cool_cold_water fish..

While North America seem to have a lot of small cold water
minnows we in Middle Europe only have 2 to 3 small and slim
of 6 to 12cm (2.5 to 5"). Well and they're not that
colourful but lively schooling swimmers and at least
absolutely _no_ biotope killers. On the one hand it were a
challenge to detect them but on the other hand it would
make fish watching very exiting..! :-)

While - attention - goldfish, koi and sunfish are well known
to be first class biotope killers..

I kept common sunfish in tanks. Their spawning behaviour is
very interesting and I'm sure they would love to spend the
warmer season in a shallow water pond with sand substrate
wherein they'd dig their spawning cavities..

But if you were interested in setting up a biotope pond with
a variety of water plants, plant-crowded shallow water
zones offering a big variety of refuges for water insects,
frogs, newts bathing or drinking birds I'd recommend to get
some small schooling minnows..

Unfortunately rosy reds aren't available here..

HTH..

I looked up boitope in Wikipedia and it still doesn't mean anything to
me. Could you please explain what it means to you.

Thanks,

Biotope
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search
Biotope is a coined word proposed firstly in Germany (Biotop) based on Greek
bios='life or organism' and topos='place'. So biotope is literally an area
where life is living. More precisely, biotope is an area of uniform
environmental conditions providing living place for a specific assemblage of
plants and animals. Biotope is almost synonymous with the term habitat but
while the subject of habitat is a species or a population, the subject of
biotope is a community.[1] Taking in the wide sense, forests or sea could be
biotope but generally biotope is often within the circle of human everyday
life. Nowadays, its original meaning as an ecological space itself almost
fade away and biotope is widely noticed as a keyword of preservation of the
environment.
