It's time to do some fish culling and also get rid of some of the water
hyacinth that is rapidly taking over the pond, so I thought I'd have a pond sale instead of a yard sale. I was thinking of charging $1 a plant for water hyacinth (which is hard to get since we can't import it into Arizona), sell some of my miniature water lettuce at 4 for $1, and bundles of rooted parrots feather for 5 pieces for $1. Does this seem reasonable? Too high? Too low? As for fish, these are just common goldfish, last year's fry who are now about 5" long. Maybe $3 each? I'm really at sea here. We're at least 115 miles from the nearest LFS or PetSmart so it's not as if people could just hop in their cars and bring home fish half an hour later. I've got at least 25 I'd like to find new homes for but I'm reluctant to just give them away. Any advice will be appreciated. The sale is tomorrow (Saturday). Price advice neededA buck for the water hyacinth is probably okay but I
think you'd be lucky to give away the fish. I'd think selling them where it's illegal could get you into trouble. it' not like garage sale shopping, where they occur every week.. I've never seen anyone selling anything from their pond.. Let us know how well it goes.. I have a feeling though it might be a wasted day -- Gareee (Gary Tabar Jr.) |

I'm always surprised how quickly just plain goldfish are taken when listed on my Tidbits. At the D.Garden Fair we have sold them $2 for plain orange, $5 for sarassas, orange & white. Your plant prices are also reasonable, I fully expect you'll get people out, especially if there are no specialty stores close by. You might want to check the noxious weed list for your state. Here in WA parrots feather is listed as noxious. ~ jan ------------ Zone 7a, SE Washington State Ponds: www.jjspond.us |

I could have easy sold 20 fish but they all vanished at the first swoop of the net. When I do this next time, I will pull most of the floating plants and drain the pond down for a big water change, catch the fish, and go from there. I think the WH is the only thing on the list. I know it's banned from being imported. sigh Gabrielle |

My pond was the place to be this afternoon. A lot of people came just to
see the pond. My ad in the paper just said pond plants and fish but that was enough to get about 40 people to stop by. A few even bought and I've been asked to help one couple build there first pond. A buck for the water hyacinth is probably okay but I think you'd be lucky to give away the fish. San Diego Joe 4,000 - 5,000 Gallons. Koi, Goldfish, and RES named Colombo. And the fish -- which were too wiley to get caught -- were what everyone wanted. I've got a list of people to call when I do get some netted. I did unload a few plants. Gabrielle |

Gabrielle A good way to catch fish is to use a large piece of bird netting. Stretch it across the bottom of your pond with some small stones to keep it at the bottom. Then, just lift from each side. Works great. San Diego Joe 4,000 - 5,000 Gallons. Koi, Goldfish, and RES named Colombo. |

Gabrielle Gabrielle, I'm glad the sale generated a lot of interest, even if the catching didn't go so well. I have about 2 dozen plants yet to sale myself, I'll probably try the freebie ads. ~ jan ------------ Zone 7a, SE Washington State Ponds: www.jjspond.us |
