Lost my best koi
 

For the last couple of years, my largest koi has had a tumor. She was
about 1- years old. She finally succombed to it. She was very tame,
had long veil fins and was 26" long. A sad loss. The others seem to
be doing fine.

I'm sorry to hear that.

My favorite fish was named Monstro, after the
famous whale. Have tried not to get too attached
to the fish after that.

Sorry to hear about your loss :-( I know that there are many people out
there who would say they are just fish but these are people who tend not
to keep or if they do keep fish they don't observe. Many fish have
endearing characters that make us become attached to them and their
longevity makes them as much part of the family as a dog or cat.....

I was sorry to hear that, too. The first fish I lost was a 9" Ogon, who
started swimming poorly on his side. After a week of watching him start to
wither away, I put him in a Ziplok of pond water and put him in my freezer
'til he was gone. The next year, I had a beautiful Kohaku die. I did an
autopsy on her and discovered that she had become eggbound. After that,
I too, became rather detached about my roll as pondkeeper. Now they're all
gone and I have drained the pond. ;-(

That's a bummer. I would have just left it to the frogs and other little
critters out there to enjoy. We've decided if the fish ever go we'll pull
the nets and let the wild things have the ponds.

I could have gotten mosquito fish from Vector Control and bought some
frogs, but I didn't. It would have turned into a mosquito farm. With a
bunch of little kids here, and West Nile Virus in the area, I opted to
drain it. ;-/

Sorry to hear about your loss, Jim. I was adding water to my pond the
other day and realized that I had gained three fish. I know two are
goldfish fingerlings, and the third also is likely to be one as well,
though I didn't get a good look at that one. Glad to hear the others are
ok.

Jim, so sorry to hear about your fish. I see my fish as living time lines,
so if an older one were to die, it would be like that time line gone. They
may not be warm, fuzzy & cuddly, but they give my eyes a lot of pleasure to
see them swimming happily along.

I'm not one to name fish really, but I put 4 wakins and 4 fans/moors in the
lily pond this year that I won't be bringing in. Last year all but 2 were
taken by a bird (I think). A club member mentioned finding kids fishing
over his fence, but I don't think that was it. Anyway.... I put 5 fake fish
in way before I put out the real fish. Daily I go out and say to myself,
there's Precious (the prettiest one of the wakins), Twin (who is almost as
nice as Precious), Peewee, the smallest wakin, and White, a white wakin.
Then there is Panda, the panda moor, Momma fan & Baby fan, and a black moor
that really doesn't have a name beyond that. Not exactly imaginative, but
works for me. ;-) Other than disappearing into the pre-filter a couple of
time early on, all going good now. ~ jan

After I lost a few of my favorites I decided to really attack the
problem. Since I moved in 1999 and put in a new koi pond and veggie
filter I have not added any new koi to the pond. After I lost 2 to
infected eggs and one orfe to jumping, I netted the pond to keep
birds out and fish in. I now cover and heat my zone 5 koi pond and
feed the koi during winter so they dont have to go for 6 months
without food and go thru such long periods without a functional immune
system.

After losing some of my favorite fish I found myself reluctant to go
out to the pond, afraid of who I might find floating or gone. I still
get a little worried in spring when I count whiskers and look to make
sure they are all there.... and there are times when I spot what could
be a floating corpse but is actually a chunk of floating lily bud and
my heart races a bit. But mostly I am glad to go out to my pond to
sit every day, morning to wake up, at night to sit mesmerized by the
side lighting on the fish as they swim lazily in the pond and am not
worried about losing them any more.
