Pond growth and non-growth
 

I went out to check my pond today after a week away. The air was at
77 degrees! The water celery is clearly starting to grow! The
hyacinth is asleep.

My blueberries and blackberries are budding and pushing leaves.

Spring is coming to the South.

I've got lily pads coming up. Was 80+ last week for a day or so, now
back to 70s here in So Cal.
I seem to remember that hyacinth doesn't get going until late Spring or
so out here. By Summer, you can't stop it!

Hi Kurt,

We are not jealous...just wishing.

Our hyacinth do take time getting going. Ours generally come in to
end the green water phase of spring...tho we have begun running our UV
to prevent the green. It goes off once the hyacinth begin doing their
thing..

Our lillies have buds visible, but are not yet pushing leaves. We
have some new colors from late last season, so we are looking very
much forward to the new blooms!

So. Cal. leads us in temp.

I've got friends in SC who now swelter on occasion.
I'm just looking forward to my relandscaping of the coping area.

The only thing that seems to be growing apace in my pond is blanket weed :-(

I need to get out there and pull it out but it's still too cold for me
to be tempted to plunge my arm into freezing water

I use a length of cane to wrap it around.

Naturally. North American's chill their beer to hide the fact that it
tastes like urine.

I'll give that a go if the sun comes out tomorrow. I'm thinking that if
I don't get rid of it now it will take over within the next few weeks
and smother what few plants I have at the moment....

I'll give that a go if the sun comes out tomorrow. I'm thinking that if I
don't get rid of it now it will take over within the next few weeks and
smother what few plants I have at the moment....

I think they're about £25

I'll bookmark that if manual removal doesn't help......I seem to recall
from my last pond keeping adventure that stuff like barley straw helps
as well - or maybe I'm thinking of something different.......

You're right.
I've never tried the straw packs myself, but there is also bottled extracts
too.

Done the deed with a bamboo stick (keeping it well clear of the liner) -
it's a bit like twirling candyfloss....anyway pond is now pretty much
clear of blanket weed - along with my aerating plants that got tangled
with it :-( Disturbed a frog who didn't look best pleased....

On the bright side - the lily I put in last autumn as a trial is
starting to show new shoots :-)

Can't wait for the LFS's to get their spring plants in.....I guess
that's still another month or so off...

Yeah, I've seen the bottled extracts. Anyway I braved the cold and tried
the stick trick - it worked really well - so for now I have an almost
blanket weed free pond :-)

I usually toss the blanketweed in the compost bin.
However, it always pays to have a look first in case of froglets etc.
Last year there was a dragonfly larvae - scary looking thing !
