Wash. state says fish pedicures illegal

SEATTLE Washington state officials have banned a procedure that uses
tiny fish to nibble dead skin off the feet of customers getting
pedicures.

Peridot Nail Salon in Kent began offering the procedure several weeks
ago, with customers paying $30 to have small, toothless carp tickle
their toes for 15 minutes.

But the state Department of Licensing decided the procedure was
unsanitary and potentially unsafe, and Thursday declared it illegal.

Agency spokeswoman Christine Anthony says state law requires that all
implements in pedicures be sanitized, and there's just no way to
sanitize live fish.

What? "Small, toothless, carp" is practically a synonym for Goldfish.
Haven't you ever had them nibbling at you while working in the pond? I'm
only astonished by what people will actually pay good money for...

The correct fish is a garra rufa. (Gosh knows what they're using in
Seattle... visualize eastsider rolling eyes about the westside of her
state.) ;-)

From: http://www.usatoday.com/news/offbeat...edicures_N.htm

Ho said the hot water in which the fish thrive doesn't support much plant
or aquatic life, so they learned to feed on whatever food sources were
available — including dead, flaking skin. They leave live skin alone
because, without teeth, they can't bite it off.

Or you can watch:

Course communal pools are frown upon because the fish tend to cluster to
whomever has the feet with the most food. ;-) ~ jan
