How Cold at Your Pond?
I'm located in central Arkansas. They're predicting lows of 13 on Thursday
night, the coldest so far. Just curious, what's the temperature like at your pond? TIA JB |

We are in Jackson MS. The prediction for Thursday night is 16
degrees. It got to 35 today, according to Jim's outdoor thermometer. Jim has cut off the water to the pond and drained the pipes to protect the ones above ground from the hard freeze. Phyllis |

We are forecast for 13F tomorrow, Friday. I'm guessing the below freezing temperatures won't be around long enough to freeze the pond surface, so I'm not expecting any difficulties. -- Hal Middle Georgia, Zone 8 http://tinyurl.com/2fxzcb |

TIA JB Here in Newark, Delaware, we will have a low of 4F. Both the heater in the pond and the bird bath (heated) I think will handle that. Having a heated bird bath in this weather is real important for the birds as their natural water sources freeze up. We've got bunches of feeders and many varieties of birds....I know that's off topic but thought it would be ok to share. |

What's everyone's latest report? There is some serious cold air across the
nation. Alaska's revenge for not accepting their governor (or ridding them of her) not sure which? ;-) We had it before Christmas, but we had snow on the ground which insulated my pond so I had to be careful running the heater or it brought it up and over 40F, at which time it started melting my snow layer. Then we warmed up and I mean seriously warm after the holidays. I think one of the days was 60F, most high 50's with wind! Unfortunately we're now in an inversion where the temp doesn't change much from day & night. 32F during the day, 28F at night, the days are grey and dreary. No snow for insulation. Pond was down to 35F as I haven't had it on since those really warm days. Turned it on about 8 hours ago and it is up to 36F. Will leave it on till morning. Also have heated bird bath, for birds and squirrels since ponds are covered in winter. Though I finally went out and checked the lily pond. In 2 small places the screen is touching the water, but I'm sure they're all iced up now. That pond only has a bubbler and 100 watt heater. So give your latest cold report and how your ponds are fairing? ~ jan ------------ Zone 7a, SE Washington State Ponds: www.jjspond.us |

MS got to 21 degrees. 17 would have been a record.
Tonight will also be in the low 20s. The pond has some ice on the waterfall, but otherwise it is clear. Jim |

I think it got down to -10 or lower. Something went wonkie with my titanium heater
and it cut out. the pond on that size froze altho the air blower kept the other side open. I created a new "in the pond" veggie filter, moved to sit on the ledge near the blower so the pump continues to pour water into the filter and the water celery looks green (frozen?). The new design for covering the pond resulted in the plastic slipping down and heat escaped. Got a new heater, dropped it in but it has been too cold for me to sneak out for a peek until just now. The surface is all thawed and the temp is 38oF but the plastic is flat on the veggie filter and there is ice. sigh. Time for a new design for the "lean to" over the pond. I think I am going back to hoops that clear the snow off at least. Ingrid |

Well, it got down to 25.5 last night here in north Florida, and my
attempt at sprinkling water over the plants to keep them from freezing didn't exactly work when temperatures got that low. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...n172009004.jpg How it used to look in warmer times: http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...n012008012.jpg Oh well. It's supposed to get to 60 today, 70 tomorrow. |

It's supposed to get to 60 today, 70 tomorrow. Sure made for pretty ice sculptures. I think you're suppose to leave the water on. Even if it forms ice, the plants will make it. Leaving the water on until the ice melts keeps the temp above 32F.... water gives off heat when turning to ice so the story goes. ;-) Holding just below freezing here. Ponds at 39F and I turned the heater off hours ago. Ingrid I'm feeling for you! -10! Yikes! ~ jan ------------ Zone 7a, SE Washington State Ponds: www.jjspond.us |

From mid Dec. until around 5 Jan. my ponds were covered with ice and a layer of snow. So, quite assuredly 32 or 33 degrees. Then up to I believe about 38-39 degrees. Last night (17-18 Jan) again ice on top (will melt during day) so again 32-33-34 degrees. |
