I always swore I didn't want koi in the pond because everyone said
they would never survive in the pond here if not brought inside every
year - Muskoka Zone 3b - as the pond gets much too cold and although
there is usually some kind of open area there is no guarantee.
Wellthe SO decided the other day that the koi in the pet store were
too pretty to deny anymore, so I now have 4 3-4" koi in the pond. So
now I want the real scoop from POND people. Will I have to scoop them
at the end of every year? Pond is 15x21 and is approx 4' deep in the
centre. As I said there is usually a small opening where we keep the
one fountain pipe running minus the head of course. I have tanks so
bringing them inside is not impossible just a HUGE pain. Well I
await the fountain of knowledge to start flowing

Hi from Ottawa Canada, zone 5
I have a pond 14 by 21maximum 24 inches deep, and lots of goldfish and
koi in it. This past winter was the first winter for our pond and we
decided to bite the bullet and leave the fish in. We bought an aerator
which ran all winter and kept a hole in the ice. A few times,
certainly not more than 5, we put a deicer on the hole to open it up.
This spring, all the fish we alive and well! We were thrilled and do
not plan to ever bring fish in the house, too much trouble and not
enough room.

We have a 12 x 22 x 24" deep pond. It has had 9 koi and a variety of
goldfish, now over 10 years old. The koi have thrived and grown
huge. Thay cruise around happily, breed like mad and eat like pigs.
If your pond does not freeze solid and you keep some air in the
winter, they should do well with your depth and size. Have a good
filter setup. They will stir a smooth bottom and sweep the muck to
the low points. Have a blast!

Ingrid, I couldn't agree with you more about krill. Not only did my koi
love it, but I tried it in a Thai recipe that called for dried shrimp and
it was purty darn good!

the big 75! Gotta go another 30 so I can dance with my bride at our
50th Wedding Anniversary!

I gave the koi to my son-in-law. He, his brother and cousin are serious
fish guys and are taking good care of them. Besides the pond outside and
several freshwater aquaria, he's got a 250 gal reef tank in his house.

Nick,

You have us beat. Our 44th anniversary will be at the end of July. I
hit 65 this year. I am not sure what I will do if we live here when
we hit 75. Pond maintenance isn't much...but then....at 75?

I had to replace our submersible pump this season. I put it at the
bottom of the 7' deep well when I built the pond in 96 or so. Works
well. BUT at 75, will I want to dive down and pull the pump? I
thought not! So I put the new one (Pondmaster) OUTSIDE the pond, but
under the normal water level for no-prime service. Changing this one
means only shutting off two valves and undoing couplings. Maybe I can
pull that off at 75.

Gotta stop whining guys, my soon to be 82 yo Dad still bike rides 20
miles/day MINIMUM!!!! I'm hoping by the time I'm 75 I can afford easy
vortex filters... and a pond boy... oh wait, I raised one of those. ;-)
