Season waning
 

I'm seeing the start of the ponding season coming to an end. The Arrowhead
& Sagittarius turning yellow with no new growth coming up to replace the
old. The lilies have slowed way down with only a bud or 2 from the hardies.
Only the Tropical is still stunning and showing off. Little does it know it
will be in cramped quarters in a month or less.

The watercress grew way too well, we're having to trim under the hot wire.
We've had a couple visits where the raccoons made it inside the perimeter.
We're thinking they're getting zapped on the way in and they stay in their
forward motion. They don't stay, and very little has been disturbed. I have
foil with peanut butter attached to the wire for them tonight. On the
webcam it looks like they're pretty young, thus need some serious
behavioral training. ~ jan

MS is doing the same. The new growth is way down.

We don't have a wire for the pond, but we doo for the garden. Our
deer have learned to avoid it.

We have two new labrador puppies. We cleaned
out a lot of the underwater stuff and trimmed up the
island so, if they fall in, they won't get tangled.

We've never had a dog who voluntarily went in the
pond. All of ours and all of our guest doggies.
Our old lab used to like to cool her feet in the frog
bog but that was it.
I guess there is a first time for everything.

Sounds like you had a rough ponding season, not fun! I get the behind and
school starting, the nature of the beast till we get back into routine. I'm
going into week 3 and I'm sure it will be better than the 1st two. They
really messed with the class schedules this year, making it doubly hard for
us in the behavior class where we manage all 3 grades, 6th-8th. We'll get
there.... at least by June. ;-) ~ jan

I have searched and found that composite decking molds, not a good thing at all. So
trying to find Ipe at reasonable price.

You have to look at 'long term' and include labor whether it is yours
or some other guy's. . . then Ipe is cheap. I'm still hemming
and hawing over Ipe or a recycled plastic deck. Not the composition
stuff that molds, fades, and stains -- so far the downside of the
recycled plastic is that I haven't seen any that I thought looked
natural enough- but I've had a few other irons in the fire and haven't
looked much.

Here's one site I've read through- I need to find it locally so I can
look at some

Yep, things are winding down as well in central Arkansas. Had over 100
days of 90 degree + temps but in the last week we dipped down into the
lower 40s at night and 70s during the day. Forecast for the weekend is
to be back in the 90s again but the season is changing. We're
experiencing super low humidity (for us); was 13% yesterday. Having a
lot of evaporation from the pond.

Picking of dieing lily pads and skimming off some pine needles. Got to
bring out the leaf netting soon.

Thinking about switching out pumps for the winter to one with a lower
flow but that's all I've ever done is think about it. Not sure what I'm
going to buy now that Oase is no more in the pond pump business.

Here in SC Washington State, we didn't have it near as hot, which was okay
by me. Temps now are similar to what you described. Today I pulled the
cannas out to the kiddy pool so frost can knock them down, hard frost
usually happens well after I put the leaf screens on, thus the reason to
remove them. Pulled the taros out and treated them with safer soap after a
severe pruning. I decided against the tenting/pest strip as I still ended
up with bugs last year. Spraying them has been effective.

The taros will stay on covered patio till next weekend when I'll bring in
them inside most likely, along with the two tropical lilies. One of which
is still blooming wildly, the other has its one and only bud coming up and
I'm wondering if it will make it up before the next weekend. We're suppose
to be sunny (this weekend mild, but drippy) all next week, so we'll see. I
sure hope I can winter both of them over. ~ jan

Wow, that was pretty back in 1997. I didn't know that about composite
decking. I assume in drier climates it would be okay? I know they use a lot
of it here. ~ jan
