Three Blind Mice (and all their relatives!)
 

Covered my pond and water fall this year. Since doing so, I have
noticed that the berm is now riddled with mice burrows and tunnels!
It is SO bad that I am will need to dig out and repack the berm
supporting my stock tank bio-mech filter.
Anyone else have this problem? If so, aside from a cat or two how did
you get rid of them? I have never seen anything quite like this
infestation.

Are you sure they're not moles? Moles are really hard to get rid
of. They eat grubs and worms so wont take most baits.

They look like mice to me and their dropping are consistent with what
I know to be mouse droppings. However, that being said, there could
be some moles running around the area as well. I will take a closer
look as some of the burrows. I will know for sure this spring as I
need to reconstruct my waterfall berm due to the amount of burrowing
that has gone on this past fall.

This is a good discussion. I had a mouse this fall getting into the
squirrel feeder. Where you see one there are probably more.... I put a
block of what I think is called Kat-con? Under a pot with a block on top of
it so the raccoons can't access it (not that I wouldn't mind disposing of
them that way, but it would probably just make them queasy.) Found the dead
mouse a few days later and disposed of him, haven't seen any more since.
I've never seen damage to my pond, but I know they will chew holes in
filter material if left unchecked.

Do you have moles in your area JB? I know there are pellets for gophers,
perhaps there is something for moles, a laced grub perhaps, stuffed in
their burrow? ~ jan

I had not thought about using PVC pipe to protect other animals from
the D-Con. That is a very good idea. I will give it a try.

Here are some other ideas-

The PVC T's are what I use in the garden. The T makes it easier to

And I have plenty of PVC and T that I cannot use for much of anything
anymore. As soon as the weather begins to warm up and I will try
this.
Thanks for the link to the bait stations article, Jim. Most
informative. We do not have many squirrels here on my side of
Colorado Springs so they are not a bother. The mice though. Since
the creation of this housing development some years ago, all the
predators have pretty much moved out and the mice and all stayed! I
did see an owl across the street last week and that was very cool!
Hopefully a few more predators will return (not the big blue "chicken"
though).
