I've found exactly the same thing. It makes me wonder how many ponders are micromanaging things they do not need to.

I'm in Western NC at 3000 feet, and while this season has been mild, last year our pond was frozen on top for probably the better part of a month (possibly longer), and we had no issues at all.

I think it is a case of pond size, debris on bottom, fish load. Because via
the net we have no idea if a pond is filled with leaves, is overstocked and
is small, it is best to advise w/caution and at least suggest a bubbler to
keep a hole open in the ice. ~ jan
