Water Lily in a pot
 

I have a waterlily in a pot that is sitting in a large container full of water. Can I keep the lily in a pot, will it be okay or does it have to be out of a pot and sunk in earth in the bottom of the container? I have noticed that its roots are starting to protrude from the bottom of the pot.

Is the lily totally submerged? All of my water lilies started out in a
pot at least until the Koi rooted them out or the tuber grew so large
that it rooted out of the pot and into the potting medium that collected
on the pond bottom.

I started off just sitting it in water and gradually lowerd it further in as it grew taller. Right now the water is just over the edge of the pot, I guess you could say its now submerged completely.

No problem leaving it in the pot if it has nutrients. It will grow out of the pot by itself. In our cement pond, they grew out of their large pots and grow fine on the raw cement.

Kind of depends what your pond is like. If allowed to fend for itself it
may not thrive if it can't jump the pot edge when the growing tip hits it.
If it does jump the pot edge it will populate your whole pond. Okay if
that's what you want, but all sorts of debris will eventually catch in it's
dying rhizomes and roots.

I put my lilies in plastic baskets lined with weed fabric, dirt, lily, and
more strips of weed fabric on top with river rock. Feed the lily tomato
spikes every now and again. This will make it easier to control the lily,
keep the pond bottom clean and when it comes time to divide, easy to remove
the lily. ~ jan

Ah, I'd better explain. Its not actually in a pond, its sitting in as really large container so its acting like a mini pond. :)
