Default I thgout I would introduce myself....

Hi all! I just thought I would introduce myself and say that I love the idea
of starting up a pond in my backyard sometime. Seems like goldfish would be
good enough fish for it and am wondering if the pond would need to be
protected with a wire fence to keep out predators like raccoons, birds,
etc.? I like the idea of using a carpet or astroturf like material beneath
the liner to maximize liner life. How long do liners usually last? The
outdoors can be a very hostile place, I know that some plastics will
disintegrate in the hot sun or water conditions. I'd love to set up a long
channel of rocks, etc. that the pumped water could flow through and get
oxygenated by. I heard that there are a lot of trolls here, if there are
then they should go away because I could really use this group for
assistance. Later all!

Goldfish are for fish tanks you boob. You want Franken Fish to start.

Daniel this use to be a wondeful group, It is not anymore. Trying to post
here and to get the right answer is difficult. You don\'t know who is who.
Once you post here, your subject to harrasment. If you cross or reply the
wrong way to Carol, known here as Reel Mckoi, and her army of anonymous
sock puppets you are going to be insulted and stomped. Now unless you are
familiar with killfiles, or filters, and your are a real internet expert,
and you want to pass time updating your filter every day you may get a
decent reply. If not, you can subscribe to this group:

http://groups.google.com/group/The_Pond

Over there there is no need to post a daily welcome to rec.ponds using an
anonymous remailers for fear of being forged.

Unfortunately that is correct, this channel has been caught in the crossfire
in a multi-year long war between Carol aka Reel McKoi, and somebody who is
known as Jabbers. Both of them have more then a few loose screws.

The end result of this is that too many people would have been in a position
to assist you have given up and left in disgust. There is a google group
that might become a viable alternative, although it has yet to reach a
readership large enough to be self-sustaining., but atleast Carol and
Jabbers are banned from it.

Hi Daniel,

There are lots of folk who can and probably will give you good advice
about how to set up your pond. People can also point you to wonderful
sites with FAQ's sheets. I'll take a look tonite to see if folks have
responded to you. Could you let us know where you live, what wildlife
has access to your pond area and how big a pond you are thinking of doing?

Depends what is around and how the edges of the pond are set up.

EDPM gives you 20 years or so. Concrete, like diamonds, can be forever
and expensive.

I'd love to set up a long

Great idea and you can get lots of advice on how. Streams and veggie
filters are a very good idea!

Hi Daniel,

If you can bear with us, we're hoping the group will clear up soon. Just
don't feed the trolls. Many of us use kill files and the group looks
almost normal once you weed the negative elements out.

You're gonna need some good books. 45 ml EPDM has a 20 year guarantee, but
will live for many more if protected from the sun and conditions. YMMV Put
your money into infrastructure, like a good filter, bottom drain & skimmer.

Welcome and research research research. Ignore the trolls. I don't
think there is an organic control for them that won't hurt your fish and
other pesticides seem to just make them grumpy. I found a lot of good
info. on www.koiphen.com. They can be a little self assured that
their's is the only way, but they have some great advice and there is a
lot of step by step posts on how to do some neat things.

Hi Daniel,

Try to ignore the morons who insist on having their own personal war here. There are still quite a few good regulars here who I'm sure can help you.

I'm fairly new to this myself as I only set my pond up this year and still haven't got my waterfall/stream finished, but FWIW I'll give my 2 pence worth.

Sorry, can't help you with raccoons, we don't have them here. I built my 800 gallon (US 1000 gallon) pond half-in, half-above ground to prevent the dog walking into it and hopefully deter herons, which I'm told, like to land and walk into ponds to fish. The pond is 1 metre (3 foot 3 inches) deep with plant shelves around 400 mm (16 inches) deep. The shelves have a 2 inch layer of concrete to reinforce them and the excavated part of the pond has a couple of coats of sand/cement render onthem for the same purpose and to stop stones puncturing the liner. I know 16 inches seems deep for plant shelves but it is also to deter herons, cats, etc from stepping in. The outer walls are of concrete block construction 18 inches high.

the whole interior of the pond is lined out with foam rubber carpet underlay, then the butyl liner.

## If we didn't net our ponds we wouldn't have one fish left. Also, even
without fish the raccoons and neighborhood dogs would quickly have the
plants trashed.

I like the idea of using a carpet or astroturf like material beneath

## The one we have is guaranteed by Tetra for 20 years. Check and see
before you buy.

The
outdoors can be a very hostile place, I know that some plastics will

## The liners we have are UV stabilized. Since most of the liner is covered
with either water or rocks they should last a long time.

## There is no way to get rid of rude people and trolls. Just ignore or
killfile them. And beware, as one is IMPERSONATING legitimate posters here.

There are two ways to get rid of trolls and rude people. They only rude
person here is yourself. Pack your bags and leave. The trolls will go
away.

Second, join a new moderated group where rude people (which means you
Carol) and trolls can\'t penetrate.

The first way is not going to happen, which mean further decay to rec.ponds

The second way, the new group The_Pond, has already been formed and is
making progress. Right now there 34 members, this tells me that there 34
individuals who are quite aware that rec.ponds in its current state is
headed towards oblivion.

Beside I know this is hurting you. You had to post twice using your know
socks, Mckoi and Cracklin.

Stop harrasing other people in other groups, and they will stop harrasing
you in this one.
