farm ponds ok on this group?
 

i recently purchased a property with large farm pond, about 40 yds
diameter: no liner or filter. am interested in fixing it up and stocking
with bass. will need info on dock building, aquatic plants for cover,
nesting cover, feeding, etc.

at first glance, this NG seems mostly about "backyard" ponds, the kind with
a liner and a filter. would "farm" ponds be off topic?

I sure hope it's OK; I post occasionally though I have a 2/3 acre earth
pond.

I do have water lilies and lotus grown in plastic pails (and the Lotus in
tubs) in it.

Where are you located?

Likely nature will provide the "cover" foliage, and your local soil
conservation and/or county agent types can point you at sources for fish.

I stocked with fathead minnows and large mouth bass. Only the bass
survived once they started spawning, 2 years after stocking fingerlings. I
thin them occasionally by the "worm and six-pack" method.

We do have mostly ornamental garden ponds
here but not all, so we'd love to have
you stick around ;-)
My SIL has both a natural pond and a garden pond.

An excellent resource for natural ponds is
EARTH PONDS SOURCEBOOK by Tim Matson.

Another resource is the newsgroup misc.rural
Right now it seems to be running about 50%
OT political topics so it is a rather volatile group.
We occasionally wander OT but usually keep to ponds.
Basically we believe all the world would be better off if everybody has a pond
- if for nothing but to dunk one's head into when they get all hot and
bothered.

I don't know the charter or any such technical stuff, but I think what you
have is a big pond. Actually I think an ocean is a big salty pond!

So IMHO I think you will be 100% within topic to post here.

thanks for the welcome everyone! i may not be around the group in the
immediate future, as i'm not scheduled to close and move in to the new
homestead till end of april. packing, moving, etc...yuck!
