W. H. survived winter
Some of my water hyacinth survived the harsh winter with just a plastic
sheet over the pond. It got down to below 30 degrees also. they are starting to send out new growth. Who else has this happening? |

i think this would bode ill. if water hyacinth starts being hardier in
winter then it will be illegal in more states. the reason it isn't illegal in the northern states is that the winter temperatures kill it. just my opinion... mad -- You cannot make anyone love you but you can let yourself be loved. Did you sink them or just leave them floating? Where are you located? Our winter got to 20 degrees, briefly (Jackson, MS).
The WH got no protection at all. We had ice about 1/2" thick for a few days. The majority of the WH plants died. A significant number made it through (~25%). Last year we put plastic over our WH and had more like a 70% survival rate. Maybe we will do that again next year to get a running start. We had several hundred last year. It is a good way to start the season. -- JIM ______________________________________________ See our pond at: home.bellsouth.net\p\pwp-jameshurley Check out Jog-A-Thon fundraiser (clears $140+ per child) at: jogathon.net ______________________________________________ "Beak 21" wrote in message ... You hit the nail on the head, mad. Last year during the Master Gardener
class on weeds the doctorate said if he had his way WH would already be on the noxious aquatic plant list... course he's from the west side where it could easily be over wintered by a careful pond person. He talks tomorrow and we'll see if he has anything new to add. I just hope that if it gets on the list that I know about it before it all dies so I can winter some over inside for my personal use. I have removed all the parrot's feather, but I keep anacharsis, both of which are on our state's noxious weed list. ~ jan (Washington State) On Sat, 29 Mar 2003 09:19:04 -0600, mad wrote: i think this would bode ill. if water hyacinth starts being hardier in winter then it will be illegal in more states. the reason it isn't illegal in the northern states is that the winter temperatures kill it. just my opinion... mad See my ponds and filter design: http://users.owt.com/jjspond/ ~Keep 'em Wet!~ Tri-Cities WA Zone 7a To e-mail see website -----------== Posted via Newsfeed.Com - Uncensored Usenet News ==---------- http://www.newsfeed.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----= Over 100,000 Newsgroups - Unlimited Fast Downloads - 19 Servers =----- |

The rest are compost. I have two little pieces of green ones i threw back in too. I think i might actually get to see what one looks like in the summer. I am not overwintering it again tho. ·.·´¨ ¨)) -:¦:- ¸.·´ .·´¨¨)) jammer ((¸¸.·´ ..·´ -:¦:- ((¸¸ |
