I am soon to receive a bowl lotus. Has anyone here had any experience with
this type of lotus? I want to plant it in a container on my deck. I live
in North Carolina and am wondering if it is OK to place it outside at this
time or should I wait until it warms up a bit more. Any other advice would
be appreciated also.

hmmm, then I think the next question is 'do
you know what its growing conditions were before
it comes to you?'
As in, was it in a greenhouse?
You'll want to match its current conditions to your current conditions.
If it was in a greenhouse you would want to slowly prepare it for life outside.
Give it a few hours a day to get used to the change. Don't rush.

I am zone 7 and my zone 5 lotus, (also a deck dweller) doesn't begin to
show life until May and I still have to be watchful of night conditions if I
don't want the first few leaves to get bitten. (I'll stick a clean peanut
butter jar over the emerging leaves at night.)

Thanks for the info. I am also zone 7. It's been in the 70's here during
the day and not dropping past the lower 40's at night. I am keeping an eye
on the extended forecast though. Do you leave your lotus on the deck year
round or do you move it in somewhere for the winter?

I leave it on the deck.
It is in a fairly large container between a container of black rush and marsh
marigold and a container of cat tails.
This is its third year.
First year I planted the seed and got pads on the surface of the water.
Second year it sent up pads on the water and a few arial leaves.
This year it should send up a flower!!

I have not heard of bowl lotus....Is it the same as teacup lotus ....a VERY
small lotus? If so I am told they are extremely diffacult to grow. Jerri

Hi Jerri, I believe the bowl lotus is probably different from a teacup. I'm
not possitive though. The bowl lotus is supposed to have a leaf span of
about 9". They are supposed to be easy to grow and hardy to zone 5. From
what I have learned they originated in China and got their name because they
are small enough to be grown in bowls. I have been told that they can be
grown well in a 10" pot. This is my first attempt at lotus and I was trying
to gather as much info as possible to make sure I do a good job.

I think then that my chawan basu and baby doll would fit into that
catagory....both very easy to grow....They are my 2 favorite lotus of the 6
different kinds I have.....Jerri
