them?

you know the sock that is on your washing machine hose? it keeps the threads and
solids from going down the laundry tub. this is the same idea. It may keep the
filter cleaner. dunno. Ingrid

I tried one had problems with it clogging with algae it was a pain to
get out and clean

If you are woried about stuff getting into your pump a couple large
plant baskets clamshelled around the pump work wonders and are easy to clean
you need to cut a hole for the hose and cord and then zip tie them
toghether

If it can't be fixed with bailing wire or duct tape
its not worth fixing

Our pump is in a 5 gal bucket with a 1/2" holes all around the sides of it
it, set on bricks in the bottom of our 7' 'deep well' i.e. old septic tank.
The water has no problem going through. Junk does not get in. Only small
fish go through. Seems to work well.

I ended up using one last year. Our waterfall had a really diminished
output, and when we went to check the pump, we found it clogged with dozens
and dozens of teeny snails. No idea how they got there unless they rode in
on a few plants, but we had to take the pump apart totally, clean it out
well, and tried the pump sock. Ours is a mesh bag with a plastic-foam
enclosure for the pump. Plop the pump in, pull the drawstrings, and it's
done. We have a PondSkimmer arrangement, and when we clean out the skimmer
and filter, we just vacuum the pump sock. Hasn't presented a problem for us
yet.

How big are your pump and pond. I suspect our pump would grind snails...but
will check if the flow goes down! Have you any problems with clogging?

Pump socks

Cin,

Pump socks are good; they come in different meshes depending on what you are
trying to prevent to get into the pump. I get ones with the larger holes
because I am just trying to prevent the soaked leaves from covering the
intake holes of the pump, plus the pump sock also gives and increased area
for the pump to draw its water from if and area gets covered with, in my
case, leaves.

It has worked for me very well.
