Pond fad over......

The pond fad is over where I live. Several pond stores closed and the pet
stores have cut way back on their pond supplies. No flea market dealers are
selling pond plants anymore. People I know have filled their ponds in or
just let nature take them over. The economy may have contributed to this, I
don't know. Our ponds are still there but we've let nature take them over.
I pull out excess Canadian pond weed a few times over the season. My ponds
are full of newts and frogs and small populations of minnows from the bait
store near the lake.

That could well be nationwide.
I will intend to expand more on this later
(but I'm not promising!)

Our pond is thriving. The industry appears not to be.

Our two ponds are also thriving. The only fish I have right now are minnows
from the bait shop. The herons and other predators ignore them. The ponds
are chuck full of frogs and newts. I sold the filters and just have a pump
in each pond to keep the water moving. Only a few of the neglected water
lilies have survived.

Still seems to be popular here, so far. We're just having to try different
ways of contacting people and getting the word out. As folks drop the
newspaper & go to non-commercial TV, we too, have to adopt things like
facebook & other internet forums. ~ jan

I have a 500 gallon pond, and friends with both larger and smaller
ponds. All in the city.

You would think that wanting a pond would be widespread, but not so.
Around here, ponds are very rare.

It may be that you need to know someone with a pond, before you get one.
I have a friend that wanted my advice about keeping the neighbors kids
out of her pond. So, she took my advice and now those kids have their
own small pond.

No kids here fortunately. At one time there were ponds all up and down my
semi-rural road. Most have been filled in. I only know of one left here
now other than mine, plus the stock (cattle) pond on the property next to
us. But he just has the pond for the cattle. The other pond is a 5,000 gl
one it appears the owners more or less abandoned.
