I just tested my water and I got a water hardness indication that was

high. What do I need to soften the water?

Okay, here is where I'm going to pass you along to the experts,
and I do mean experts ;-)
Experts, there has already been one koi death, four other newly purchased koi
in the pond, 20 goldfish and 10 minnow types.
I've retitled the thread.

Post your pond size again so they can figure out
how many gallons you have.

And then post what the reading was on your test.

Why do you want to soften the water? We have very hard well water that
we must soften for showering and washing, but we use this water as it
comes out of the ground for all outdoor uses including watering and
the pond. We have healthy plants and fish.

If you are having problems, I seriously doubt it has to do with
calcium carbonate (hardness) in the water.
