Default Lotus potting question

Jan (I think) mentioned that "lotus don't need as much soil as was
previously recommended". I started a couple of standard unnamed varieties
in about 8" of soil with 4" of water cover. They are in tubs now but might
get sunk into the pond later. Is this too much soil? What about
recommendations for the smaller Chinese types?
