Lotus Bog....Nedra Help!!

Ok...I want to put in a lotus bog, but I can't remember just how it should
be done. I know that Nedra has one that I really like, but I need to know
how large and deep it should be and if I should pot the lotus up, or just
let them run wild?
I really have no space limitations, so the skys the limit!!

I am interested in Lotus 101 as well. I had a neighbor give me some tubors,
and I'd love to hear about planting, and care for them. My interest was
peaked by the "lotus bog" statement. It never occured to me to do a bog just
for the lotus.

Lotus Bog....Nedra Help!!

Hi there! In November of 1998 or 1999 I could not figure
out how to winter over my lotuses. The four lotuses were
planted in 18 - 24 inch pots. They were all bought that summer
and were blooming like crazy but they were in whiskey barrels
and I knew those would be frozen solid during the winter.
I had to find a way to winter over my precious lotuses..
Alot of the folks on
rec.ponds had lots of ideas,,,,, but, I decided that to be on the
safe side I would have a lotus pond dug. I'm in Zone 6, south of
St. Louis, Missouri.

First of all you need to dig a hole as big as you can afford!
Mine is 12 feet in diameter. I had it dug to 24 inches. The
guy brought along a bunch (scientific... lol) of builders sand.
He put down the liner and shoveled in a foot of sand. The sand was
my idea. Once the pond was filled I let it sit overnight ... next day I slid
in the 3 whiskey barrels full lotuses!

The following spring I divided them and ended up with so many
lotuses I had to squeeze to get them into the pond. All are planted in
pots.... but, that did not keep them from jumping the
pots. The pond just finished its 3rd or 4th
winter and the lotuses are finally coming up - I have lots of aerial leaves
.... no buds yet, though.

You definitely want to pot them. They will fill in a pond in a year
or two if left to go wild.

Anything else you all want to know just ask!

Lotus Bog....Nedra Help!!

Forgot a couple of things ...

Dig your pond about 2 - 3 feet from your fish pond -
attach a hose to a pump and drop it to the bottom of
the fish pond. Add the fish pond water to the lotus pond.
This is the best and easiest way to fertilize the lotuses.
I usually let the lotus pond overflow a couple of minutes.
I also push a couple of fertilizer tabs into each pot about
once a month....

I am thinking about creating a lotus bog with no pots...Just plant them
directly in the pond itself...

B.V., I was cautioned against the No Pots method early on.
They will take over the pond in just a season.
I took the advice to pot my lotuses and it has worked
out just perfect. The lotuses still jump the pots in the summer.
I don't do anything to get them out of the pond.... I wait until
I divide them.

I am not too concerned about this. I want to create a pond with nothing but
lotus, so if they take over...who cares?
