? Koi in same pond with goldfish

Recently [4 days ago] I was given 3 very attractive +/- 4 inch Koi. I've
added them to my goldfish pond, and they seem to be acclimating well. I have
added Koi in the past [several years ago], but they've never survived. Since
they have generally just vanished, I've suspected they were gotten by a
heron. The only one I've found "floating" was definitely pierced by
something. I think I've discouraged the heron with a decoy I move around
from time to time since the goldfish don't seem to ever vanish, thank
goodness.

But my question is: are Koi and goldfish really compatible? I seem to recall
reading somewhere they can be competitive and belligerent to each other; but
I'm not sure if I actually read that, or misunderstood what I read, etc.

Any info welcome.

It's been my experience that koi, goldfish and shubunkin all get along
fine together in tank or pond.

Whenever I visit aquatic centers, they always have a mix of these fish
in their display ponds.

They'll get along just fine. I've got 6 koi and perhaps 50 gf in the same
pond with no problems. The koi just grow bigger.

? Koi in same pond with goldfish

Hi,

I'm new to this group, live in Colorado Springs and have recently built a
500 gallon pond. I stocked with goldfish, waited a month then added three 8"
Koi a freind gave me. Problem is, the goldfish seem terrified of the Koi,
not even coming up to feed anymore. The Koi arn't feeding either, maybe the
terror is mutual. Is this a normal phase? When will everyone learn to sit
down and eat together?

I have a 750 gal pond, and I have Koi, goldfish and shunbunkins with no
problem.
They all swim together, eat together..no problems. Maybe it's because they are
new to the pond.

John,

I suspect time will settle this issue... I just added 4 small (2-3")
koi to a 1,000 gallon pond that had a handful of goldfish and it took
a week before the koi showed the slightest interest in food.

We're now two weeks in and they're practically jumping out of the
water when they see me come up to the edge with food.

Give everyone some patience...

with a 500 gallon pond you are overstocked. it sounds like you didnt quarantine the
new fish before adding them. new fish bring in disease to the fish that are already
there. what are your water parameters? did the ammonia spike?

Hi Ingrid,

I tested again today, ammonia is just above zero, nitritites and nitrates
zero everything else is fine. The fish were quarantined by the previous
owner in an aquarium for two weeks before I collected them, all seems well.
I cleaned my filter yesterday, hopefully it is fully active now after a
month. The goldfish seem to have relaxed, but the Koi are still shy. We
shall see, it has only been a few days. Watching everything very closely. I
hope I'm not overstocked, might have to go with an external filter or make a
second pond.

John, you're overstocked.

Now the good news: you can overcome it with additional filtration and
*meticulous* attention to your water parameters. And/or you can build a new
pond! New ponds are fun . . . G! Most of us start that way: little pond,
nice fish - MORE nice fish (BTW, fish grow if you don't kill 'em first!) -
bigger fishies - NEED/MUST HAVE bigger pond! (sigh) It's a never-ending
cycle (and a lot of fun, too!)

As to whether or not koi and goldfish are compatible, they're *so*
compatible that they cross-breed! Fortunately, the off-spring of such
matings are sterile . . .

quarantine in an aquarium is not the same as in a stock tank with you checking the
fish every day... and it is a month minimum. start digging. rule of thumb is 100
gallons per koi, 1000 gallon minimum for koi pond. 20 gallons per GF. Ingrid
