How to determine koi quality?
 

Hello all,

I was looking around the net for any information on how to determine the quality of Koi when I go
shopping for them. This webpage seems to give lots of information on the subject and figured you'd
be interested in it as well.

How to determine koi quality?
 

I have books, but have never really looked for an on-line source. I know
that Koi USA has a monthly article on judging koi, and always have very good
representatives to choose from, then the reasons why "this" one is better
than "that" one.

But in reality, your choice is subjective. Unless you're buying a fish for
show purposes, buy the one you like and the rest of the world be damned G!
It's YOUR opinion that counts, not everyone else's. I have "pond mutts" that
are very dear to my heart. I have fish with pedigrees. I love them all. And,
to the untrained eye (i.e., non-collectors), most of the people that check
out my pond can't tell the mutts from the high-$$ fish.

If you really want to know what high-quality fish look like, go to some of
the on-line auction sites. Caveat emptor: I've seen fish offered that
*really* aren't worth what they're asking. But it will let you know what
"tosai" and "tategoi" quality is versus "pond grade": only you can decide if
you want to spend the $$ for the difference.

Koi Encyclopedia. I don't know the link, but it's great.
Check google.com. The site also gives pronounciation of the
koi types with a photo of each. Great place to learn. I
don't visit often enough.
