Killing algae in fountain (no fish or plants) ?
 

We just got a copper fountain that uses about 10 little squirters.
It's developing a severe algae problem that clogs them up. Any
thoughts on what to put in the water to completely kill this stuff.
There are no fish or plants in it.

One thought I had is bleach, but how much? Is there a danger of birds
ingesting it or would they sense its presence and stay away?

I'd check with your local nurseries, ones that sell fountains. I know I've seen
stuff specifically for
fountains and it should say if it is fish safe on the container.

Don't know about the danger to birds, but probably the bleach tablets used
in pools will keep the algae levels down.

I have read in here that a small amount of bleach will not harm birds and it
does not take much to keep the algae down (1Tbsp?/Gal water).... That is
what I'm planning on using for a water fountain that I have. My concern
would be what it would do to the copper... Chlorine will react with the
copper unless it is really, really sealed well... I also believe that copper
chloride is toxic... Boiling water would kill the algae but also remove the
sealant...

I assume you are in the states?...Here in OZ you can but a product called
Alginok, which "knocks over" algae, there must be a similar product there,
if not send me an email to and I'll post some
tablets. It's safe for fish as it is often used in aquariums .
