Default Murky Waters

I have a small pond and decided to put plants in it this year. Last
year I kept the pond clear with some pool chemicals but this year I
wanted a more natural look, maybe even some fish. With all the pollen
and dirty trees around the pond the water has become dark and murky. I
have placed some lilly pads in the pond and am afraid they will die
(at $10 a pop) if I start adding chemicals to the pond. I also would
like to add some fish but don't want them to die either. Can anyone
point me in the right direction to keep the pond clear and safe.
Thanks
