How long do carp live?
 

Dunno if I got the right newsgroup here but it's the only 'pond' one I
could find. I have a farm pond, around 10 years ago my father stocked
several white amur and israeli carp for weed control. We really didn't
have a bad weed problem in the first place, my Pop succumbed to slick
talking 'fish' saleman. The carp eat the fishfood I put out for my
bream/sunfish. How many more years can I expect these fish to live? Any
input appreciated...

This is the right group. There's some farm pond owners hiding about. Carp
lifespans range from 7-20 years and I've seen upwards of 60 years. I would
try to catch them and just destory them as you catch them. Hopefully your
dad bought triploid carp so that they are not reproducing. If they are
reproducing you'll have to kill all the fish in the pond and start over.

Thanks for the reply Sam, you've confirmed what I had heard about the age.
Catching them is going to be tricky, they've seemed to avoid being hooked so
far.

I used to fish for carp with friends as a kid. We'd use fairly large hooks
with dough for bait made of just flour and water. We'd put enough weight on
the line to make it sink to the bottom and just wait.

If you're not doing this already, you might be able to just let it sit and
check on it a few times a day.

well I will try to answer Koi which are a carp have been known to
live ~200 yrs in japan but the average I believe with good care is
around 60-70 in your pond probably 20 or so I would guess

We used to use the center of good old Wonder bread. Roll it and squash
it into a hard ball around a fairly large hook. (Boy, I "WONDER" what
that stuff does to your colon?) The weight of the dough ball will sink
right to the bottom and like Paul said "Just wait". You better use
heavy tackle and tie yourself to a tree. At ten years old those babies
are going to fight like hell and for a long time ....... they have a
lot of stamina. It's a shame to destroy them but you have to do what
you have to do. I hope after all your trouble you don't end up with a
plant problem. (Something to think about) Good luck!

Hank, fear not, I had my fill of destroying things long ago and faraway.
I s'pose I'm getting softhearted in my old age, that's why I asked how
long these critters live.

And I learned - to my abject dismay - that the average fish destined for the
pet market lives only 2 weeks!

Our well fed, pampered koi can live very long indeed. Suggestion, John B?
just buy more food! Maybe you can tame them enough to feed from your hand,
and then they'll be pets and you won't mind haveing them around . . .
