I was calling the critters in my pond last year toads. Then someone said,
"They can't be toads as toads aren't water critters. What you have must be
frogs." But after reading on here, sounds like that isn't true. So, are they
toads or frogs and how can you tell the difference?

Looked at the photo titled 'frog on' and that is a frog.
Toads are only interested in hanging out in the pond when they are mating. So
you will see toads in the pond, toad eggs (laid in strings) and toadpoles,
small, jet black and string like tails. They will turn into tiny toadlets and
leave for the year.
Toads are more rounded, hunched back and 'dry looking'. They kind of lumber
along and are not good jumpers.
Frogs will stretch out their long legs with they jump, they have a more slender
'figure' and are more efficent swimmers.
You can enter your state name in Google and the words native amphibian and
maybe you can id your
pond visitor.

I went through the same "toad vs. frog" thing a few years ago -- the
answer became obvious when I saw the first frog, as I'd only seen toads in
my pond before!

BTW, toads may not spend all that much time in the water, but it's clearly
preferred as the "singles bar hangout"! That was another clue, actually --
I only found toads near or in my pond after dark. Frogs, one at least,
would be there day or night (I think she was guarding the eggs she had laid
there).

Also, toads look "dry" (in my opinion), but frogs look wet & sleek; also,
the eyes of frogs seem to be much "bulgier" (sorry) than those of toads.
Based on the pictures on your website, that's a frog.

This may be entirely a wrong assumption on my part, but it also seems to me
that toads are always "treading water" when in the pond, but frogs disappear
under water & come back when they feel like it.
