For a couple of weeks now I have been doodling various pond / landscape
layouts on the backs of envelopes and whatever else happens to be nearby. I
have decided it is time to get out a tape measure and start making a more
accurate drawing of my backyard space. My lot has lots of elevation changes,
and it is difficult to visualize how some of my proposed designs might look.
I think it would be really cool to model my yard in 3-d on the computer..
Anyone have advice RE a relatively inexpensive ($100-$200)? 3D
design-rendering software that might work? Or is it impossible to get
something worthwhile in that price range?

Regards,

Chris Herring

A few years ago I got a program called LandDesigner 3D. Didn't have enough
time to really fool with it very much. I think it is in the $40 range.

I sure do. If he has ANY desire to do 3d work of any type, this is the
primo suite to do it in.
Versions for Windows, LINUX and MAC. Send him here, he will find the
download page without any trouble...

Oh, did I mention that it is well within his budget? WELL within...!

lol, sorry I can't help but I just got this "Close Encounters of the Third
Kind" vision - ya know where all of a sudden everybody is making things into
mounds like mountains (like the mashed potatoes, etc.) -- only w/you it's
doodling on envelopes, etc.

:-}

Rhino3D is around that price and can certainly do the job. The learning
curve is not too bad and best of all, when you make your pond, you can have
it calculate the volume.

There is a demo version that might fill your bill.
