John Doe Bugs!!!!! Help ID.
 

Ok, While playing around in my small pond I found some interesting
water insects... I just don't know what they are. Take a look and see
what you think.

Sorry for the poor quality... I am trying to talk my wife into a
digital camera that can do macros. I think this is justification.
Shouldn't we all take pictures of bugs?

Absolutely!

They are dragonfly nypmhs.
Soon they will crawl out of the pond on a stem and then split their skin, crawl
out the back and spread their wings. It will take about an hour for the wings
to harden and then off they'll fly eating up a bazillion or two of mosquitoes a
day.

While they are nymphs in the pond they will eat all sorts of underwater
critters, tiny tadpoles and tiny fish. Good population control.

They molt their nymph bodies a number of times. By the time they crawl out of
my frog bog they can be as big as an inch long. Kindof spooky to see all the
empty nymph shells lined up in the cattails.

I have some that are nearly 3 inches I found three in the kiddie pool
tossed em into the veggie filter so cant see waht they actualy turn into

We've brought some dragonfly nymphs inside and set them in a glass pondlet with
either tadpoles or baby rosie reds. They will skulk around the bottom and then
zooooooom up really fast and grab their prey. They have this secret weapon
under their heads, kindof like an extra set ofjaws like the Alien, that juts
out and captures the targeted critter. Is very kewl!

I have 4 skeletons on my taro. Looks creepy indeed, but i don't
actually want to touch them. :) This fall i'll have to before i bring
the plant in.
