Default Pool filter for ponds

I have a fairly new sand filter that was to be used for a pool.
Installed a pond instead. The sand medium is too fine to use as a pond
filter. It cloggs very fast. Can anyone tell me or direct me as to
what medium could be used? Thanks

Hi Mikey,
You can consider SpringFlow. Do a Google search
for 'Springflow bio media' to read up on it.

You'll probably want to apply some mechanical filtration prior to the
biological filtration, and you can use scrubber pads as shown in this link:
http://www.skippysstuff.com/biofil18.jpg

There are many types of media to choose from. Check out some of
the filters folks from this group show on their websites for other ideas.
I just happen to have combined the scrubber pads and
Springflow for my particular application. I have an upflow filter design
so I placed the scrubber pads as a first line of defense or, coarse
mechanical
filtration. Then 2 layers of 3/4" batting topped off with Springflow
which I placed (stuffed), into the kind of bags you buy oranges in.
I did it this way so that the Springflow is modular, which makes for
ease of annual cleaning. These media are all very light and easy
to clean, unlike lava rock or sand.

Don't forget to use lots of plants in the pond too.

Hope this helps,
Mark

What is to fast ? Will the sand filter eventually clean up the water then
not clog up so fast?

we are using a sand filter (& separate bio) for our pond.
I am unsure of what type of sand we have in it...

we backflush every couple days. it sure seems to get out a lot of stuff, as
the water is very dark..(our pressure is about 10,, & backflush at about 18)

there is a place that sells medium to change from sand... but it would cost
over $500.!!

so I am still using the sand....
& besides. ,, I guess the stuff you backflush out,, when you replace
water....(if it doesn't rain) helps with water exchange.. doesn't it??
