Official heat wave pics...
So we officially have a heat wave (more than 5 consecutive days above 30°C),
fish are dying in natural ponds through oxygen deprivation :-( 33°C in the shade as I type this... (92°F) at 9 PM Courtesy of a spray bar (thanks Roark) and a trickle tower (and a Hi Blow or 2) and lots of spraying, my garden manages to survive this very un-Belgian weather. So do the fish. Water temp: 23°C Pics can be found at http://www.wide-o.net/august_pond/ Enjoy :-) Theo |

Theo wrote my garden manages to survive this very un-Belgian
weather Heavens. I missed the Belgian reference somewhere down the road. I've been wondering about you all over there. Do many people have air conditioning? We never did when I lived right on the coast on the Pacific, but here in the inland of Washington state we sure do love it as 90++ visits us a lot in the summer. Our pond is 2.5 feet deep, some shade and does well in the summer. I had a couple of thermometers in there at one time but the dogs always managed to sink them, eat them, destroy them - you name it. k30a and the watergardening labradors http://www.geocities.com/watergarden...ors/index.html |

Right about now I would welcome a heat wave. We've had cool nights and
rainy days. My pond, partly in shade and 4' deep on one end is 65 degrees. I suspect the ground has not warmed up. In trying to make a tropical lily happy I have created a mini pond, 8" deep beside the big one and put in a submersible aquarium heater set to 75. Just did it yesterday. This am the temp in the puddle was up to 72. Anyone else in SW Ontario have low temps??? Heather SW Ontario (Zone 5) "K30a" wrote Our pond is 2.5 feet deep, some shade and does well in the summer. Welcome to *my* world, Theo! But it is rather rude if you're not used to it.
The gardens and the fish seem to be handling it rather well, though. Lee "Theo van Daele" wrote in message ... I just drooled over your pictures, Theo. Just like K30,
I too missed the fact that you are in Belgium. I thought you all were in England... in fact, your pond pics just scream England! Sorry. Where, if you don't mind telling us, in Belgium are you? Your pond is .... perfect is the only word that comes close to
describing it. At those temperatures I would have to tell those koi to "Make room for Daddy." Although some are large enough to throw you back out of the water. Good luck with the heat. Most here don't have airco, but I guess that will change rapidly.
Personally I only have a portable unit for the bedroom, but that was very expensive ($ 1000 ) and doesn't work all that well :-( We mostly have an unstable climate with lots of rain all year long, but this year has been very dry. July was the hottest month since they started recording temps, August is going to be a scorcher as well it seems. Haven't had a decent rain shower in 8 weeks now, which is quite unusual. Me I like it to be 25°C max, that way you can still haul stones around or dig something, now it's just sitting next to the pond, sweating. LOL & thermometers... my wife & I are thinking about a golden retriever/labrador, but I'm not sure how that will work with the cats, turtles & fish. They are great gentle animals ... do yours jump in the pond very often ? Theo "K30a" schreef in bericht ... Heavens. I missed the Belgian reference somewhere down the road. I'll have my old world back thank you ;-)
Welcome to *my* world, Theo! But it is rather rude if you're not used to it. You certainly have to adapt to it. Digging a hole at 12 PM with ozon alerts etc was not the smartest thing I ever tried. |

Thanks BV :-)
I do spend a lot of time on the landscaping, as in my view it kinda "makes" a pond, let's it blend in with the rest. But there is a downside: when you want to redo things, you're inclined to take half measures so to not destroy plants/trees etc, which leads to half baked designs (try putting in a concrete floor for the pond without destroying half the garden). I could pretend I had a *plan* but it went more like "hmmm, rectangle of lawn, yawn... put something here, now that's a nice tree lets put it there, ooh, lets dig a hole and fill with water, hmm, needs to be bigger, ooh, got some space for another bush there" etc etc. The nice way of putting it is "it grew organically", but in reality it's more a chaotic process that turned out OK in the end :-) Theo...I think you have THE most fantastically landscaped ponds I have ever seen. |

England ... probably true, but it is a coincidence. Although we have a very similar climate I suppose, and we do watch many BBC gardening programs over here. I live near Antwerp, about 50 miles from Liege. Did your neighbor ever visit Belgium again ? Does she still speak French ? (I'm from the Flemish parts) Liege is a very special town ("The Fire City") and has in history long been it's own state. It's also the "gateway" to the Ardens, where so many remains of WWII can still be found. In fact Belgium is one big WWII museum. Theo "Nedra" schreef in bericht link.net... Yeah, the thought of joining them has occured to me a few times now. I don't think the fish would mind much to be honest. Hmmm... :-) "Hank" schreef in bericht ... Ah Yes, Antwerp... I know Antwerp. Your landscaping
does look like England - now I know why! And Yes, my neighbor, Yette, goes to Belgium often. At least every 6 months. Yette does indeed still speak French... what is strange is that her sis, Anne, is over here as well & she speaks French and sounds French whereas Yette sounds Dutch or German! She talks alot about WWII and the days when the Germans were coming and going. Then when the Yanks started bombing!! Wow! Don't believe I would have liked it there at all. Her hubby went back with her a couple of times. (a different hubby from the one she married during the War.) Augie walked all over Liege and was very impressed with the city. You have told me more than I've ever known and we've been neighbors for 45 years. LOL! I knew about the Ardens ... My ex-hubby had gotten shot down over Liege so they had lots to talk about. Theo wrote . do yours jump in the
pond very often ? My labradors are a bit odd. Neither one of them like to swim! As puppies they like to dig in the turf bank and make it all muddy. They took out water hyacinths, chewed them up and pulled lilies to the side by their pads. And they laid in wait for spawning goldfish and removed the fish from the pond to lay on the grass, I think they thought they were the vice patrol. Now that they are older they leave the pond alone. Every once in a while the younger labrador will go racing through the frog bog and suffer smelly paws as a result. Hope it cools off! k30a and the watergardening labradors http://www.geocities.com/watergarden...ors/index.html |

Hey Nedra,
Yette does indeed still speak French... Is she perhaps called "Yvette" ? Or maybe changed her name later ? Yvette is a "common" French name, Yette certainly is not, hence the question. what is strange is that her sis, Anne, is over here as well & she speaks French and sounds French whereas Yette sounds Dutch or German! I guess 50 odd years in the US might do that to a person :ducks: :-) Don't believe I would have liked it there at all. Belgium has been bombed, invaded & ruled by just about every country in the world (I think New Zealand gave it a miss ;-) From reading up on these wars, it would seem that WWI was even worse when it came to death toll & general mayhem (trenches). But indeed, WWII was not the best time to wander around over here, especially in 44 - 45 during the Von Rundstedt offensive. Anyway, off to make some paste food for the fishies ! Theo |

Yette is her nick-name. Yep, I know Yvette is common French name. Let us know how the fish like the Pasta.
