Baby fantails
 

The other day I was doing maintenance in my lily pond and found baby
fantails. So cute. This year I put in all orange & white fantails, 2
ryunkins of which one is male, a female panda moor and a female oranda. He
has 3 ladies to chose from, what a lucky guy. ;o)

Anyway, I'm amazed that many of the babies have black spots. Due to pH
troubles my water hasn't been as clear this year, so I have no idea how
many I have at this time, but some are already an inch long. I just love
this part of ponding, makes all that hard work of putting in the lily pond
worth it. ~ jan

Congrats on the new babies!! How does your ryunkins winter?? I had a baby
shubunkin but he died and I don't know why..Maybe I'll have better luck next
year.

Cool, I love it when I finally spot the new babies. I started last spring
with 10 fish and I counted about forty the other day. I have shubunkin/comet
mix and shubunkin/ fantail mix. I dont have any with fantails though, the
momma died, but the babies have a longer tail and shubunkin spots and a kind
of larger mid section that makes them just look fat!

I don't leave the adults outside for the winter, but most of the babies
make it through the winter. ~ jan

The other day I was doing maintenance in my lily pond and found baby
fantails.

Jan,
I have only one fantail. The fantail does not seem to be able to keep
up with the other goldfish, it seems to have a harder time swimming.
Is this normal? I worry about it, since it gets pulled into the
skimmer almost once a day. Seems to be when it's looking along the
edges of the pond rocks for food that the skimmer current pulls it in
and it's not strong enough to swim out. It does not seem to be growing
as the other fish in the pond do. Are they normally frailer fish and
weaker swimmers due to the type of tails they have? Should I put it
back into a barrel (which is the only other 'pond' I own) or is it OK
in the big pond? I've also considered giving it to someone with a
pond that does not have a skimmer(if I can find one). What do you
think?

Hi Sue,

I have a few fantails in with some comets and shibunkin. I think they are a
blast to watch as they seem to be doing a furious motion to move along at
such a slow pace. I have a skimmer and haven't had anything other than
gambusia and my turtle in it off and on, but I don't think it really hurts
them. Does your skimmer have a net so they can be in there without getting
caught in the pump? If so I would say no problem.

It does take a while for them to be able to compete for food, but once they
figure it out, they seem pretty competitive and able to get enough to eat.

Sue, I'd normally agree w/Joe, as most fantails do manage, though single
tailed goldfish can be very hard on them come spawning time.

What you describe with this particular fantail though sounds like it would
do better in the barrel, rather than have the stress of trying to keep up
with the group or entering the skimmer daily. ~ jan
