Skimmers?
 

Hi everybody, researching equipment for the pond I'm building. The guy
at the pond store says I need a skimmer. Is that true? Been reading
about the veggie filter online and think thats the route I'm going. Can
I make a veggie filter out of a Bio falls waterfall? One thing I've
learned through many years of aquarium keeping, the people at the stores
are there for the sales. The groups I frequent for advice however speek
from experience. Once again, any and all advice is appreciated. Thanks

Personally, I think a skimmer is an absolute must. It catches the debris
while it is floating, keeping it from falling to the bottom of the pond.
The earlier leaves, dust, grass clippings, etc. are caught, the less the
filter has to do to break them down. As for the use of the Bio Falls, it
can be used as a veggie filter, but it is really to small to support very
many fish. Use a line and build another pond of at least 10% of the surface
area of the pond, and 20 or 50% is not unreasonable for the veggie filter.
It will save you some money also.

When I built my pond about three years ago a salesman where I bought the
pond liner advised me to add a skimmer but I did not want to spend that
much money. Later I regretted it and added a no-nitch retro fit skimmer.
If you want clean water you need a skimmer!!!!

Thanks for the info. I will definately get one. Any certian brand
better than others? Is there something specific I should look for in a
skimmer. I Found both skimmers and waterfalls made by Atlantic. They
are very reasonable. Anyone used these? Thanks

I have the pondsweep 700 which I like, but there is a new one on the market
named Salvio that really looks good. I am not in the market for a new one,
but would look at the Salvio closely for a replacement or upgrade. Both
have filter media in them to act as a prefilter for the pumps that sit
behind the media, and both have room for my submersible heaters that I use
to heat the ponds.

I added a Savio skimmer last spring after two years without. It was fairly
easy to install to an existing pond. It was much nicer to pull the basket out
once a week than to hand skim every night after work. The biggest benefit was
protecting the pump. I have a mag-drive and never found a very good solution
for the pre-filter problem. This worked well all year and I didn't have to
worry about the pump clogging. Also, the savio also has spots for UV's if you
want to add them.
