I've been reading several different sites, some say to put sand then
underlayment......others just say underlayment. It's not going to be a
really large pond only around 200 gallons.......what is best?

Hi Lisa,

The reason they talk about underlayment is
to keep pesky rocks from working their way
into the liner.
Anything will work. Old carpet (no nails ;-)
layers of newspaper, anything like that.
We used newspaper and old carpet for 3,000
gallons, going on six years, no problems and
we have rocks with a capital R in our yard.

Kathy......So I don't need the layer of sand? We do have a bit of rocky soil
here, not to mention a huge Silver Maple whose days are numbered but has a
root system like I've never seen before. Unlike my hometown in Indiana, the
soil here is rocky and a bit more on the clay side (but not as bad as when I
lived in Missouri).

We have so much room, hubby keeps bugging me to decide on a spot. (I think
the fish and frogs would like to leave the garage sometime this
spring...lol) I'm pretty much set on nearer the garage off the patio,
because if we go beyond the slope, I worry about any lawn fertilizer getting
into the water.

I think I would use old carpet instead of
sand.

You can always build up the sides a bit and
that will help with fertilizer run off.

PS -
I would use old carpet on the bottom
and then cut the carpet into strips and
overlap it around itself around the sides.
You might consider digging your hole a bit
bigger to make up for the space the carpet
is going to take.
(If that makes sense ;-)

Since we couldn't find cheap carpet anywhere we used old heavy shipping
cardboard and several old quilts plus rags on the bottom. So far so good -
cost $0.00. :-) We did make sure no rocks were poking through anywhere.
We used the 60 mil liner.

I went to our local flooring business and found free carpet. They agreed to
give me a call when they pulled up an old carpet. I would suggest calling
around, maybe you can find something like it.

Shortly after the pond was filled we did find a place called American
Liquidators that sold used Hotel and Motel furniture and carpeting. It was
cheap but we weren't going to redo the pond.

for 200 gallons, I won't even bother with underlayment not to talk of sand!

Well we finished digging the pond this weekend.....uhm I guess 200 was
wishful thinking.....it ended up to be 1000 gallons and 3 times as much
money as we had anticipated. (Why didn't you all warn me......lol)

Ooops! Sorry! ;-)
It is actually all part of our master plan to turn as much land into ponds as
possible...

I'll give you a heads up on bullfrogs. They can be fun pond pets but will eat
fish when they get large enough.
But they will also eat mice! And snakes and other frogs and anything they think
they can handle.
We ponders are just glad they don't get big enough to go after us! ;-)
