Shareholders Spawn
 

My Koi are still looking a bit wide in the butt, so I don't think they have
spawned yet, but we noticed yesterday...hundreds of fry. We're not sure if
it's the minnows, the Koi, the Goldies or some mix of the aforementioned
group. We'll just have to wait and see. Still no frog or toad eggs.

My koi spawned last week. I thought yours would have
spawned earlier.

They've definately been acting like it. Chasing the girls around. Splashing
about. But I never saw any eggs.

The eggs are hard to seee unless you really look for them. An easier way to
tell is the pond will be covered with white foam, and there will be a
decidedly different aroma downwind of the pond. Watch for ammonia, those
eggs are very high protein food. The ammonia in my system goes down
quickly, but the nitrites stay high for a week or two.

My koi spawned last week. I thought yours would have
spawned earlier.

My *something* spawned...I am just not sure who! For some time now, there have been a few
tiny fish in the spillway, evidently mercifully sucked into the filter, and away from the
mouths of the larger predators. They look like Comets, but are colored like the fantail
goldfish.

A few days ago, I noticed some tiny, almost transparent new fry. They look suspiciously
like miniature rosy reds.

:(

*sigh*

Time to start digging that expansion....

I must add that my koi eggs are really easy to see since I
have a raised pond and also there are no plants in this
pond. In a natural pond it would be difficult to see I
imagaine.

I noticed some foam here and there, but never a complete coverage, nor an
aroma. Of course, I currently have the stream running, and a smaller pump
agitating the water to help cut down on that "pollen haze" of still water.
So it's possible I knocked the foam out. As for the aroma, I live in breezy
area...sort of a small valley, so I guess it's possible the stink was wafted
away.

I definately have hundreds of fry in the pond right now. So far ammonia is
0.

Bonnie as you know SH Pond is going for the natural look, so there are
plenty of crevaces, plants, etc. for the fish to the eggs in. I would not
doubt they hid them from me.

They actually lay the eggs on the sides of the pond.

I didn't notice the odor this year (we had a constant
breeze) but the foam was almost like a bubble bath in the
lower pond.

Oh No, Joe ... the ones you sent are thriving in the Veggie Filter!
Once in awhile one will ease into the pond and be scarfed up
in a trice by the pond piggies :)

Happy to say that I have had no baby koi for 3 or 4 years.
I don't know what I'd do if they ever show up -unannounced :(
