Brown on Pond Waterfall and Surrounding Rocks

I've searched through this issue, but haven't found my exact problem
anywhere.

500 gallon pond with waterfall.
Crystal clear water (Maybe a slight brown tinge, but can see to 36"
bottom easily)
2000 gallon pressurized Cal Pond filter
1500 gallon Cal Pond pump
18V UV
Brown gunk growing all over waterfall and wall under waterfall

Because my waterfall is a little too powerful, I have to add appx 2
inches of carbon canned water daily due to the splash outside of the
pond.

What is the brown gunk? Dead Algae?
What affect will it have on my pond?

I'm fairly certain it is live algae, unless it was green to start with and
you PPed the pond.

What affect will it have on my pond?

Probably none, other than being ugly on the rocks, I'd take a brush to it.

Live algae? I have a constantly running uv light.
Fish and turtles are doing great. Taking a brush to this stuff all
the time would be a pain in the butt. I may like the look of it when
it is all over the rocks....I was just curious to figure out what it
was.

Hi Jerry,

Algae comes in all sorts of colors and shapes. The UV light will only work on
the free floating single celled algae that lives in the water column. It won't
do anything for algae that grows on rocks, or that attaches itself to stuff
like string algae.
If you have a good mechanical filter working you can scrub the stuff off and
it will clear much of it from the water. Sometimes adding a layer of quilt
batting does a good job.

I would have to agree, its probably algae growing. My rock water fall
is getting green also and it makes it look all the more natural. Just
look at any natural waterfall or surounding area it always has some
kind of vegetative growth on it. Not sure how it will do if you are in
a cold climate and it dies, but a filter shold clean it up then
anyhow.
