Received my plants today and have a few questions
 

I received my plants today:
Miniature cat tails
Bog Bean
Pickerel Rush
Thalia
Parrots feather
Arrow Leaf
Strawberry & Creme

The thalia was a great looking plant, had 4 nice stems with nice
leaves, however the stems got broken during shipment. They are not
completely broke off, but crimped so the leaves just hang down along
the stem. Since these are the only leaves, is it safe to cut them off,
or should I let it be. I assume I would cut the stems back close to
the main portion of the main stem, yes / no?

Miniature cat tails were kind of yellow and not all that great looking
but I assume they should make it.

The parrots feather is just a clipping of about 8 inches in length.
How do I go about planting this. Just let it float, or canit be placed
in a pot and submerged. Will it generate roots if its a floater? Its a
pretty darn nice looking plant, and none of my books tell me how deep
to plant it.

Planting depths are another concern. Different books say different
things, so I am open to suggestions.

My guess right now is the following planting depths:
Miniature cattails 3 or 4 inches of water above crowns
Bog Bean crown 2 inches below water level
Pickerel Rush crown 4 to 6 inches below water
Thalia.......dunno, I have depths stating 2" to 12" so I may try it at
6"
Arrow leaf, same as thalia, may try it at 6 or so inches deep
Strawberry & Creme, 4 to 6 inches deep
Parrots feather....do not have a clue! Pot at "X" depth, plant in dirt
in pot, weight it down or let it float??????

Any suggestions / info appreciated.

We have found that our parrots feather likes the kiddie pools a lot better
than the pond. In the pond, only little parts stick up. In the kiddie
pools, it develops good roots and lots of above-water 'feather'.

Kathy, does yours keep much above water when it floats?

So do "you" float it horizontally on the surface or place it so its
vertical......and since you stated it developes roots then I guess I
can assume this will sprout roots.........

Do the roots sprout from the cut end, or are they produced along the
stem itself much like a sensitive fern produces roots?

Yes. The BV planting method works very well on PF.

Parrot's feather will develop roots all along the stem. It will send up
'feathers' along the stem also as it grows. Just toss it in and it will do the
rest ;-)

Thinking on your observation of feathers all along, I note that our pons PF
has smaller feathers (weight sinks them) than kiddie pool or barrel PF that
grows up 6 to 10 inches and spreads out of the pool like mad. Our pond PF
grows 3" max.

I once saw Parrot's Feather climb out of the pond and cascade down the raised
side. It must have been three feet long and thick. Really striking looking.

This year the penny wort out competed the parrot's feather in the frog bog
(direct planting in the bog).
